Refugees

            The more you learn about German history, the more you realize how frequently its people and society were disrupted by political struggle.

The great literary figure Friedrich von Schiller was a victim of this, both as a person ... and as a statue!

While serving as student at a strict military academy in Stuttgart, he wrote the dramatic play, Die Räuber, which pondered the duality of good and evil, and advocated revolutionary republican ideals.  After the play was produced in Mannheim with great success and notoriety, his aristocratic sponsor was threatened by these themes and banned him from writing again.  Schiller went on to be an army physician in Stuttgart, but then fled to become a historian in Jena and then a playwright in Weimar.

This 1869 marble statue of Schiller with four allegorical figures (muses, perhaps) representing lyric poetry, drama, history, philosophy was removed by the Nazi's in the late 1930s.  It was recovered, remained in West Berlin until the late 1980s and, through a cultural exchange between East and West Berlin, returned to its rightful place in front of Konzerthaus Berlin in the Gendarmenmarkt.
