Whitney Young Development Center

            Whitney Moore Young Jr. was an African-American civil rights leader who spent most of his career working to end employment discrimination in the United States.  As Executive Director of the National Urban League he turned it from a relatively passive civil rights organization into one that fought for equitable access to socioeconomic opportunity for the historically disenfranchised.  Young drowned in 1971 while swimming with friends in Lagos, Nigeria where he was attending a conference.

In 1977, six years following his death, the Christian Welfare Society, Inc. of San Francisco, recognized as the first school in the nation for low-income handicapped children, changed its name in dedication to the late Whitney Young Jr.  At the same time the organization launched a unique and innovative new program for urban childcare.  This program would, in the ensuing years, go on to set new expectations in the role of child development centers throughout the nation.
