This is one of the 17 pictures I took at a public reception for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, which is having its annual convention this week in Phoenix. Of the 17, only five turned out well enough to post, so I should have taken more. (Regrettably, some of those that did not were of one of the few surviving Navajo code-talkers.) I took my daughter Vanessa, who when we left the house, and for some time thereafter, acted as if she were a condemned person being taken to her execution; but at the end of the long evening, I think she was convinced that her dad really knew what he was talking about after all when he said this would be a unique and very worthwhile activity. At this time, there are only 121 Medal of Honor recipients still living, of whom perhaps 75 attended the convention. Vanessa and I got to meet about 50 of them. I have shaken hands with one former U. S. President, several Supreme Court justices, and assorted other celebrities -- and now several dozen Medal of Honor recipients as well. Give me the Medal of Honor people any day over the others.

Nick Bacon, shown here signing autographs, was a U.S. Army staff sergeant with the famous Americal Division in South Vietnam, where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action. Sometime thereafter -- the action having taken place in August, 1968 -- his award was upgraded to the Medal of Honor, based on reports from pilots who observed the action from above.
