I invited my son Colin to accompany me on a visit to the Gilbert Riparian Preserve, which he had never seen before. He asked if he could use my Nikon D50, and I said yes, so off we went, each of us duly armed with a camera. This was the first time he had ever used a DSLR, and I set it to Auto for him when we arrived at the Preserve. Later I'll show him how to use the manual and semiautomatic functions, but I figured this would be the best way to introduce him to the world of DSLR photography. (I shot exclusively in Auto mode for about the first six weeks I owned the D50, and since then have hardly used that mode at all.)

Colin is a gifted artist, and while music is really his thing, he is pretty good with a camera, too. Some of his pictures may appear on his Flickr page later this week. He was at a bit of a disadvantage today, partly from using Auto mode, which clearly has its own limitations, and partly because he used the kit lens, which is a nice enough piece of glass but only has a maximum focal length of 55mm. But I thought he did quite well all the same, and with time and experience, he is bound to become much better.

I took this candid portrait of him while he was busily absorbed in taking a shot of his own. It was uncomfortably hot and muggy today, as evidenced by the beads of perspiration on his face and hands, but this ended up being my favorite picture from the whole excursion. Colin's mother and wife both really liked this one as well. I have been wanting to take a new portrait of him for some time, and I think I might order an Mpix print of this one and frame it. In the meantime, I'm going to post it on Facebook, as well as here.
