Photographing York Minster is difficult because, as you can see, it is surrounded by houses. For those interested, I took this shot from the third floor of the Marks & Spencer store. The day had been cloudly and wet, then suddenly the late sun came out.

They are currently refurbishing the Great East window, hence the scaffolding.

Most of the houses shown are 16th & 17th century, which is quite young compared to the minster which was completed in the 12th century, although it continues to evolve.

The minster site has been occupied for nearly 2000 years, from the founding of the great Roman fortress of Eboracum in Ad 71 to the wonderful building we see to-day.
