JA8535 JAL McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 starts to roll down runway 28R at London Heathrow

The 10s are back 😎😻 :)
The DC-10 was the widebody that I most liked to watch and photograph. The aircraft design was particularly suited to a number of airline liveries, Thai International being one of my all time favourites.

Although a number of classic aircraft were already disappearing from Heathrow by the early 1980s, there were a few compensations. One of these was the arrival on the scene of previously scarce or unknown aircraft such as the JAL DC-10s. Personally, I think they were one of the most attractive liveried DC-10s to visit LHR.

JAL operated a fleet of 20 DC-10-40s mainly from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, but keeping some of the fleet going until 2005! Only a handful were converted from DC-10-40Ds (Domestic) to DC-10-40Is (Intercontinental), so we tended to see the same few aircraft at Heathrow.

From my records, I saw the following aircraft between 1983 and 1985: JA8534, JA8535, JA8538 (just once), JA8543 and JA8545. As far as I am aware JA8544 also visited?

One of this regular batch to fly in - JA8535 - is seen here about to roll down runway 28R with flight JL468. Note the distinctive bulge at the front of No. 2 engine which only the Series 40 DC-10s had.

JA8535 c/n 46662 - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 was one of the first batch delivered new to Japan Air Lines (JAL) in 1976. The aircraft flew with the airline, and Japan Asia, for around twenty years, before being sold back to the USA as N662VV. The aircraft was stored at Marana as of 2005 and was still there in 2011.

The DC-10-40 was the first long-range version fitted with Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines. 42 were built from 1973 to 1983 - Northwest Orient Airlines and Japan Air Lines being the only operators, with 22 and 20 aircraft respectively.
