HB-IFZ Balair Douglas DC-9-32 seen approaching runway 26 at London Gatwick

The Douglas Collection a bespoke set of 79 Douglas DC-9s which have now arrived back from the scanning department :) There is also a set of 90 DC-8s. Again, I hope that they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

This view shows HB-IFZ - one of Balair's three Douglas DC-9s that they flew between 1970 and 1987. Balair was the charter subsidiary of Swissair, and had quite a varied fleet in the late 1970s, including the last passenger carrying Douglas DC-6 in Europe - quite a regular visitor to Gatwick. I found their three Douglas DC-8s a tad elusive :) Some typical Zenith "lighting effects" in this shot, which particularly affected my first Zenith SLR camera - a basic Model E. Note the tail of an Austrian (AUA) DC-9 on the stand - these were fairly unusual at Gatwick, but regular at Heathrow at the time.

HB-IFZ c/n 47479 'Dübendorf' Douglas DC-9-32 - delivered new to Swissair in Sep 1970, passing to Balair in May 1979 - just before I took this picture. The aircraft then switched between Balair and Swissair until April 1988 when it was sold to Intercredit. Leased to Northwest Airlines as N985US. Stored at Mojave in 2005 but sold again to Sierra Aircraft Leasing and leased to Aserca Airlines as YV-249T in Jul 2006. Re-registered as YV2445. Finally withdrawn in 2010 after an impressive flying career of 40 years, and broken up in 2012.

The other two Balair DC-9s were HB-IDN which they flew from 1970 to 1975 (before my time ;) and HB-IDT from 1976 to 1984, which I did see and photograph (next upload :).
