The outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 led to the bolstering of Hiroshima's image as a military town as many military facilities were located within the city. A group of 11 two-story brick buildings was also constructed in the Hiroshima area as weapons depots (military warehouses).
On Aug. 6, 1945, there was relatively little damage to these buildings from the bombing owing to their proximity to Hijiyama. The buildings were used as a temporary aid station for survivors of the atomic bombing. After the war, Hiroshima Prefecture Office assumed management of the buildings and then Hiroshima University Medical Dept. later took over the buildings. Along with expansion of facilities of the university, however, the buildings began disappearing one by one. The last building to remain was No. 11 and this building continued to be used for various uses including as a medical museum commemorating the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Medical Dept. However, the building was torn down in Mar. 1999 to make way for a new ward. This building had been constructed in the initial part of the Taisho era and was a building that had been designated for preservation by the city due to its having survived the atomic bombing. As a result, the brick walls used mainly at the front entrance and most of the stone materials of building No. 11 were used in construction of a new medical museum and the appearance of the original building was largely recreated.

明治27年（1894年）に勃発した日清戦争をきっかけに広島は軍事都市として性格を強め、市内に多くの軍事施設が設置されました。この地にも兵器支廠（軍用倉庫）として11棟の2階建レンガ造群などが建設されました。
昭和20年（1945年）8月6日、被爆したものの比治山の陰で建物に大きな被害はなく、臨時救護所として罹災者の救護が行われました。戦後は広島県庁などに、その後、広島大学医学部に移管されましたが、施設整備の拡大に伴って次々に姿を消しました。最後の1棟となった11号館は、医学部創立30周年を記念して設置された医学資料館などとして利用され続けて来ましたが、新病棟の整備に伴い平成11年（1999年）3月に取り壊されました。
この建物が大正初期の建造物であり、広島市被爆建物等保存・継承建物であったことから、新しく医学資料館を建設するにあたり、玄関を中心としたレンガ壁及びほとんどの石材は11号館に使用されていたものを利用し、外観はほぼ完全な形で復元しました。
