Opus40 - Saugerties NY - Aug 2011

Artist Harvey Fite bought an old stone quarry in 1938 with the intent to build a place to display his and other sculptures. He was inspired by conservation work he did in South America rebuilding Mayan ruins. He used only hand tools and winches to sculpt the grounds and at some point he realized the grounds itself were a coherent art piece in their own right. The name comes from the project which was to go for 40 years and then end. THis is where the name Opus40 came from. Unfortunately he died in a fall a few years shy of 40. The place is now a magnificent sculpture grounds that hosts all sorts of art events, weddings, banquets, Yoga, etc. these are old photos from 2011 I recently found on some old CDs.
