12-24-15 King Tide - Surfers Beach 14

            12-24-15 King Tide -- Mirada Surf Park, El Granada, CA.  It was a cloudy, rainy day, so the colors are flattened.  But the waves were up a bit, so the impact on the coastal bluff was well-shown.

This bluff is the edge of a marine terrace, composed of unconsolidated marine deposits with an overlay of recent soils.

In this area the coast is taking a double-whammy, so to speak.  The effects of sea level rise is combined with accelerated erosion due to the late-1950's construction of the Pillar Point Breakwater.  It depleted down-current sediment and exposed this area to increased wave energy.  Now the bluff edge is moving quickly toward Highway 1.  King tides exacerbate this process.

Waves have consumed more than just a bit of bluff.  A beach-side road (Mirada Rd.) that once ran from south of the breakwater to the small neighborhood of Miramar has virtually disappeared.  

A park was established in the area called Mirada Surf Park.  It is the grassy area shown in many of these pictures and it, too, is disappearing rather rapidly.
