Botts - North end - King Tide 1-13-2021

            King tides tend to push floating logs high into a wetland, where they get stranded, contributing to the habitat at the edge of an estuary.

When they get stuck in a dendritic channel, those stranded logs can provide hiding areas for young fish and other species. If they get stranded on what is usually a drained surface, stranded logs can remain for a long time. They then may become 'nurse logs' for sitka spruce, or other species. 

A sitka spruce can get established on a log, which raises them above the surrounding waters. Eventually the spruce will send roots down to the wet soil, If you look at this photo in 'large' format, you will see several young trees out in the wetland that probably got started on such 'nurse logs'. 

The Nehalem River is just beyond that closest line of trees in the background.

That line of debris runs along the north end of the marsh. Now that the king tides have finished for the year there is a good chance most of that material will stay where it is for a few months - or at least until a storm raises the level of the river high enough to float them away.
