I boarded the ship (On its way to the city of Hypothetical) and a man came up to me and said, “My name is Kramush, and I am the son of Ronald, the electrician. I gave a polite smile, nodded, and secretly admired the voice of this friendly man. His voice was soft and gentle, and he had a slight accent that made my skin tingle with joy. I imagined it was a voice that could sing me to sleep, on those long lonely nights.
Kramush stood there beside me, and we watched the waves hit the side of the ship as it left its place in front of my home town. No one was there to wave goodbye to me, and I admired the irony of the waves, as they crashed along the shoreline of a town I used to call home.
As we sailed along, I found a place by the railing, and Kramush seemed to find his place right there next to me.
The waves were beautiful, and at the same time, threatening. I was thinking that one push off this railing, and the ocean would take a person forever.
Kramush asked me if I had ever heard of MC Escher and I told him that I had, and that his piece, ‘drawing hands’ was the exact sketch that inspired me to become an artist.
He looked out over the water and asked me what I thought about Ed Harris, and I told him that I loved him in Knightriders and I was standing there thinking that this Kramush seemed to read my deepest thoughts (Not that I go around thinking about Ed Harris all the time)
So I stood there with this stranger, admiring his ability to strike up a conversation, and abhorring myself for giving such curt answers, when I really wanted to ask him a thousand and one questions.
Then my mind wandered, and I starting thinking about the mint lotion I had rubbed onto my feet this morning, and I wondered if the scent still lingered, and if it was bringing me any luck today.
I also wondered what Kramush was thinking about, and if he, too, was headed to Hypothetical, and it was then that he turned to me and asked me where I came from. I told him, “A little town called Oblivion.” And he said he had been there a few times, but never liked the feel of the place; that it always made him feel lost and forgotten.
I nodded, because I knew what he meant, and that is exactly why I was leaving.
We traveled in silence for hours and hours, occasionally smiling at each other, but mostly just enjoying the peace and the serenity that an ocean voyage can bring. Too soon though, the captain announced our arrival in Hypothetical, and I started to make my way toward the exit. Kramush stayed planted at the railing.
When I looked at him questioningly, he simply said, “I can’t live in Hypothetical. I tried it once, and I never saw the point.”
