The landmark 66.7m lattice tower used by the National Grid

            For a complete history of the station here, a book entitled "A history of the Birdlip aeronautical communication complex (1940 - 2017)" has been published by Colin McKeeman and is available online directly from the author. My short history does not do the site justice!

Radio masts have been a feature of this part of Gloucestershire since the first RAF W/T or Wireless Telegraphy station was sited in a farmhouse here during 1940. After the war, the site transferred to the new Ministry of Civil Aviation to communicate with sites overseas. It was in this new area of civil aviation communications that the site would flourish and endure until its closure in 2017. 

Now only a single lattice tower remains with various microwave dishes and antenna. It is a distinctive landmark for anyone in the area.

Birdlip has a sister site at Winstone only a few miles away.
