This one was quickly snapped with my Loxia 25mm f2.4 lens on a A7R3.
For me the only one real advantage of the R3 over the R2 was the bigger and sharper EVF of the R3.
Why the ILC industry should ignore LL, FM , DPR Nikon diehards(updated 2):
Many crazy old Nikon fans at DPR , LL and FM forums claim that Nikon is a tough and much better built system than Sony equivalent or Canon equivalent, but in reality I find their camera very weak, especially the Z7. I had the Z7 in Hokkaido, I borrowed it from my Nikon friend and tested it with a few lenses...well , do not get me wrong I think the Z7 is a good camera for slow paced work and their S lenses even the kit lens seem really good, but I found it weak and even weaker than my A7R3, let alone the R4.
My older Nikon bodies especially their D-SLRs like D700 and D800 are very tough, I admit that but their mirroless bodies are very fragile. The first camera I confirmed to be dead in my bag this time and in Hokkaido was the rented Z7 , not my own Sony A7R3 or R2.
Also Nikon fans claim their camera ergonomics and menu system are much better than that of Sony or other brand systems, but to me and to many Sony shooters Nikon menu system is very odd , I prefer Sony menu and it is more customizable than Nikon system.
Then why they always trash Sony for its allegedly terrible ergo and menu? Well it is simple they are desperate now, and ergo and menu system are the only two areas they can still find Nikon may be still competitive, that is why they focus on Sony ergonomics issue although it is actually an unfounded issue, just a matter of personal preference.
I prefer Sony menu as I have been a Sony user since about 2005, many others actually prefer Panasonic and Leica, that is fine. Some prefer the Nikon way of ergo and UI, that is fine too.
I also like Canon menu and UI, but I still prefer Sony or Panasonic for overall UI.....but that's just me.
All that said though, if they want young artist or art students market, they should try to invent a true 21st century minded camera UI based around a 6inch or bigger Phone-quality touch screen. And probably Sony is the only one major camera company to be able to do that if they seriously try it.
So I think they should start listening to the young artist people instead of the old gearheads at LL or FM.
I think listening to those old timers the fastest way to kill anyone's ILC business.
The forum guys always tell us Sony , Nikon, Canon, Leica, Panasonic ,etc. need to listen to them, but no as they have no clue about the market and the real market demands, it is better for the camera makers to shun them.
Remember most of Nokia fanboys and Blackberry fans told us we would always need physical keyboards. And those two companies the only two smartphone makers in the world to listen to their user base, and what would happen to them?
I think listening to the forums especially LL will kill any camera maker.
UPDATE: Also they (gearheads ) are very wrong on resell value of camera bodies vs lenses.
They always say lenses are more important and they retain most of their good resell value much longer than bodies.
Wrong. It used to be the case, but now most of bodies retain their original or close to that resell value much longer.
I recently sold my A7R2 and I just lost 200USD or so on it.
I sold my FE24-70mm f2.8GM in last September and I lost about 900 USD immediately.
I also sold my Loxia 21mm f2.8 and Batis 18mm f2.8 in last year(I bought the Batis again) and lost about 900US on each.
So from now on, I will try to avoid expensive lenses , even if I buy some of those I will get them used.
UPDATE2: Another big issue with listening to the gearheads at DPR, LL, FM .etc forums is that many of them are too obsessed with lens speed and they hate zooms or any slower but sharp very practical travel friendly type of lenses like the Batis series.
Many forum lens snobs trash zooms even a great zoom like the FE16-35mm f2.8GM in favor of a set of heavy fast primes like the Sigma 14mm f1.8 Art, the Voigtlander 21mm f1.4, the Sigma 35mm f1.2 Art, the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art,etc. Sure these lenses are great in terms of sheer resolution and over all image quality at wide f stops, but as a part of a good travel kit or a street kit , are these heavy primes still great or even practical?
The huge Sigma lenses are not at all interesting to me , I can accept the size of my Sigma 28mm f1.4 Art, but the 35mm f1.2 is just a bit too much for a prime. I cannot fly with just one 35mm prime , that means I will have to carry on a couple or more lenses in addition to that lens with me and that may cost me a lot of extra money as I need to upgrade my flight to a business class.
Sure the Sigma 35mm f1.2 is a great lens for pro portrait shooter, but for most of us the Sony FE35mm f1.8 E is a much more practical lens, and IMHO, also a bit more versatile lens.
I think these moderately sized practical lenses like the Sony 35mm f1.8, the Batis 40mm f2CF, the Sony FE85mm f1.8 and the Batis 18mm f2.8 , even the Sony FE16-35mm f2.8GM(or the even more compact Tamron version) are all underrated because those online camera forums are dominated by the members of the super fast lens worship shallow DoF cult.
But if you often shoot your lenses at f5.6 o f8, then those super fast primes are really a big waste of money.
I mean most of super fast lenses become sharpest at f2.8 -f 4 range and even at f5.6 they are not very sharp any more.
If you follow Lenstip.com lens resolution tests , you may know what I am trying to talk about here.
Most of the Sigma Art or Sony GM line primes are designed to really shine at f1.2 or f1.4 and they are not really great at f8.
The Loxia , Voigtlander , and even cheaper Sony f1.8 primes are usually better than the similar focal length super oversized Sigma Art lens at f 5.6 and on.
If you compare the FE85mm f1.4GM vs the Loxia 85mm f2.4 or the Batis 85mm f1.8, or even the FE85mm f1.8 E at f8 or f10, you know what I am talking about here.
The FE85mm f1.8E is sharper at f5.6 and f8 than the GM.....all computer based lens tests and Cameralabs infinity resolution test have proved that.
