L2024_1728 Trevear China Stone Mill, Tregargus Valley

Trevear Mill - the 1934 25 inch OS map shows this as disused.

The mill is asymmetric with 2 brick built grinding pans on the northern side of the waterwheel pit, and 1 stone built grinding pan on the south side.

The remains of a pan kiln and linhay are attached to the southern side of the mill. A miller's cottage stands to the south of the mill - the only one still in existence in the valley.

The Tregargus Valley is a hidden gem which anyone with an interest in Industrial Archaeology must explore. It is a scheduled monument and most of its buildings are Grade II Listed.

The valley is of is of exceptional importance for the history of china stone extraction and processing in Cornwall.

Workings operated in Tregargus Valley extracting and milling china stone from the around 1870 through to 1965 when the market for lower grades of china stone collapsed and the mills were abandoned.

The site includes the remains of five china stone mills, which together with their associated stone quarries, are the finest assemblage of stone mills in Western Britain. They include Wheal Arthur at the northern end of the Valley, with its quarry, stone mill and pan-kiln; the partial remains of Blacksmith's Shop Mill and Big Wheel Mill in the middle Valley with their associated infilled quarries, mills, associated tramways and least.

Trevear Mill to the south with its attached pan-kiln and miller's cottage; and Lower Tregargus / Mica Mill with tramway and leat at the southern entrance to the Valley.

The valley and its remains are managed and conserved by the Tregargus Valley Trust.
