Presidential Palace, Hanoi

            The Presidential Palace was constructed in 1906 by Auguste Henri Vildieu, the official French architect for French Indochina. Like most French Colonial architecture, the palace is pointedly European. The only visual cues that it is located in Vietnam at all are mango trees growing on the grounds.

Ho Chi Minh refused to live in the palace because it was too grand and an obvious link to the French colonization, which ended in 1954. He lived out his final days in an open-air stilt-house in an adjacent property. His Mausoleum is nearby; it was closed during our visit, which is just as well - I don't really care to look at embalmed human remains :)

There are still many remnants of French colonial architecture in Hanoi, many painted yellow with green shutters. I hope the citizens strive to retain the beautiful architecture, because to replace it with ugly modern buildings would be a shame...
