Soldier's Point House, a historic building on Anglesey has been named among the most "endangered" in the country. The Grade II listed Soldier’s Point House at Holyhead has made it onto the Victorian Society’s top ten of the most endangered buildings list for 2023. The striking Holyhead property with stunning sea views was built and designed by Charles Rigby in 1848/9. He was the man who oversaw the creation of Holyhead's breakwater, Britain's longest at 2.4km, which also includes a now listed lighthouse. Now in a state of neglect, the house now needs "urgent work" and a "long term plan" for its survival, it is claimed. The grounds of this two-storey castellated Victorian mansion are bounded by curtain walls with ‘folly’ towers one of which, looking out onto the harbour, functioned as a pillbox during the Second World War. Over the years, the house has been used as a private residence as well as a hotel, and has been derelict for a number of years. In September 2011 the property was gutted by a fire; at the time it had apparently been occupied by homeless people. The house is owned by Conygar Stena a partnership between Stena Line and the Conygar Investment Company and features in their ambitious waterfront regeneration plans for the town. In the proposals, which were unveiled in 2010, the house would be renovated as a new, larger home for Holyhead’s Maritime Museum.

That would be a good idea but as this photo was taken in 2024 there doesn’t seem to be much regeneration yet! I took this stood on a huge concrete block to see over the fencing.
