Fallen or toppled Moai - Akahanga (akahana) - Rapa Nui - Easter Island - Isla de Pasqua

            Akahanga provides an excellent view of the moai as they appeared back when European explorers like James Cook would have seen them back in the 19th century.  These stones haven't been moved for over 300 years.

While the restored platforms are great to photograph, an unrestored platform like this shows visitors and archaeologists insight into the island's history.

The main platform here once supported 12 moai and was enlarged from left to right over time.  The ones on the right were bigger and more recent than the ones on the left.

The oral history says the first king, Hotu Matu'a, moved here after an argument with his wife and spent the rest of his life here.
