20150818_6543_7D2-200 Coal empties through the rain

            Two DXC class (built by GE in USA as NZR DX class, upgraded to "tunnel motor" status for use in the 5 mile Otira tunnel, that is about 10km ahead at the township of Arthur's Pass), lift an empty coal train to the highest point on the line across the South Island.  Returning (loaded) coal trains of 30 cars use 5 of these locos through the 1 in 33 climb (most of it in the tunnel) to Arthur's Pass from the west.
