The Tianti Mountain Grottoes

            The Tianti Mountain Grottoes, located about 50 kilometers south of Wuwei City in Gansu Province, lie on the northern slopes of the Qilian Mountains and are among the earliest grottoes in China. Dating back to the Northern Liang period, they boast a history of approximately 1,600 years. Built along the cliffs, the site features 17 caves primarily dedicated to Buddhist themes. The sculptures exhibit exquisite craftsmanship, blending artistic styles from both Central China and the Western Regions, making them a representative work of early Buddhist art. The most famous is the Great Buddha Cave, housing a 15-meter-tall seated statue of Shakyamuni, which is majestic and serene. The grottoes also preserve vibrant murals that depict Buddhist stories, celestial beings, and lotus motifs, showcasing the artistic achievements of ancient craftsmen. The Tianti Mountain Grottoes are not only a significant site for studying Chinese grotto art and the spread of Buddhism but also a popular destination for visitors and scholars due to their stunning natural scenery and cultural value.
