Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is the capital of the Yangon Region of Myanmar. Founded in the early 11th century by the Mon people, the city became the capital of the country under British rule following three Anglo-Burmese wars (1824-1826, 1852-1853, and 1885). It remained the capital after independence from the British was acheived in 1948. The capital was moved to Naypyidaw some 330 km (205 mi.) to the north in 2006.

The Sule Pagoda is located in the center of downtown Yangon. Historical evidence indicates it dates from the the 15th century. Legend holds that a pagoda was built here before the Shwedagon Pagoda and therefore the pagoda is more than 2,600 years old. It is believed that a strand of the Buddha's hair is enshrined within. The stupa is some 44 m (144 ft.) tall and is surrounded by a ring of shops and shrines from the early 20th century. The pagoda is listed in the Yangon City Heritage List. This young lady kindly posed for a photograph in the pagoda. She wears Thanakha paste on her face, widely used in Myanmar. Considered an attractive cosmetic, It has a fragrant scent and helps protect from sunburn.
