Stockport Heaton Mersey Cheshire 4th May 1968

            Taken from the cab of BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92118 on the GLC main line at Heaton Mersey, looking east, just about to pass under the old Midland main line from Manchester Central station, left, to London via Cheadle Heath, right. 

That impressive bridge spanned the Cheshire Lines Committee main line and the River Mersey to the right. At this point in Cheshire the river is relatively small but west of Warrington it opens out into the wide estuary associated with the Mersey at Liverpool.

The train has just backed out of Heaton Mersey shed which is beyond the bridge to the right & is made up of 92118, Stanier 8F 2-8-0s 48319 & 48356 en route to Newton Heath shed via Stockport Tiviot Dale & Guide Bridge. My one and only footplate ride on BR. 

All is now gone, including the engines, and the carriageways of the M60 sweep through to the right of this location. The Midland Railway station at Manchester Central lives on as the GMEX building & a single goods line runs through Cheadle Heath which branches off the former CLC main line from Liverpool behind this location.
