Great Central Railway Leicester North Leicestershire 25th July 2009

            A broadsides view of LMS Fairburn 2-6-4T 42085 testing its safety valves at Leicester North station. The driver and owner's rep are checking for hot bearings after its first trip to Leicester - everything was fine - and the fireman had "gone under" to hook up to the train. The guard is keeping an eye on the process on the far side so we have the complete train crew in shot.

The fireman has obviously got a big fire in and while he has been busy with the connections the pressure has slipped round and lifted both safety valves. Easily done when the engine is as free-steaming as this one. He will put the injector on when he's done and any case the climb north out of the station will soon use up the extra steam and then, except for the short pull out of Rothley, it's downhill to Loughborough.
