West Highlander Preston Lancashire 25th September 2009

            With its West Highlander headboard fitted LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 45690 Leander waits in platform 5a for the 10.11 departure on the first leg of the trip from Preston to Glasgow Central. The following day we were pulled from Glasgow to Fort William by K4 61994 and then on to Mallaig by K1 62005. On our return to Preston Sunday we had travelled 700 miles behind steam. Brilliant.

The entrance ramp down to the impressive 1880 LNWR & LYR joint station is behind the wall to the right. This was the first time I had stood on Preston's platforms for 41 years!

We climbed both Shap & Beattock of course and it was my first time on both gradients behind steam. I was not disappointed, Leander took them in her stride - a real thoroughbred.
