The Scarborough Flyer Part 1: Doncaster to Hull 12th September 1999

            A 10 minute video of LNER V2 2-6-2 60800 Green Arrow on the The Scarborough Flyer from Doncaster to Hull via Thorne North & Goole. A second video will cover Hull to Scarborough journey.

1) The train started from Doncaster station and 60800 is first seen waiting for the stock light engine and then departing from platform 8 at 11.30. We cross the ECML and over the River Don bridge to take Marshgate junction onto the ex-South Yorkshire Railway/MSLR/Great Central Railway line to Grimsby via Thorne South & Scunthorpe.

2) We leave the overhead wires behind & pass under the GCR Doncaster Avoiding Line which then comes in from the right. This was originally   the start of the 4 track section to Thorne but is now only 2-track to near Kirk Sandall where the South Yorkshire Joint Line joins from the right. The site of long-closed Barnby Dun station is passed with a stone overbridge at its northern end.

3) The pointwork just south of Stainforth & Hatfield station marks where the GNR & GCR Joint Line (the Skellow Lines) joins from the left. The station is shrouded by smoke as the loco coasts through & is followed by Thorne Junction where we leave the GCR to head north on the ex-North Eastern Railway line to Goole. We pass a Sprinter on a Doncaster-bound train before entering Thorne North station under its fine NER bridge & pass the original redbrick station building.

4) The stretch of line from Thorne North to the level crossing at Moorends was my stamping ground as a child and my short-lived trainspotting days in the late-50s were spent at the crossing which was near my grandmother's house. Perhaps the sight of filthy WDs on endless coal trains turned me off the hobby although I do remember the ritzy Yorkshire Pulman being a high point. Thorne Colliery where my father & grandfather worked is seen on the right although the new headgear and winding systems date from the 1980s.

5) The line traverses flat drained marshland & then bridges the Dutch River - a diversion of the River Don built by Dutch engineers in the 1620s - before crossing the LYR goods lines to the docks & entering Goole with its extensive docks and tall cranes. The LYR passenger line from Wakefield joins us on the left before we hurry through Goole station. The platform awnings survive today but the redbrick building has been rebuilt. North of Goole we cross the River Ouse on an impressive swing bridge, pass Saltmarshe station and join the Hull-Selby line at Straddlethorpe Junction.

6) This stretch was 4 track & semaphore signalled in 1983 but later reduced to 2 track in the late-80s (?) The remaining semaphores & signal boxes seen on this video were replaced in 2018 I believe. The first station Gilberdyke has such wide platforms because the southernmost of the tracks was removed and the platform extended across it. East of Brough an industrial Rolls-Royce Sentinel diesel is glimpsed behind the trees before the Humber Bridge comes into view. It was the longest single-span bridge in the world when opened in 1981 but today it is the 12th longest.

7) On the outskirts of Hull the pointwork into what was the entrance to Hessle Yard is crossed before curving left as we bridge over the eastern entrance to that yard. The Hull & Selby originally ran straight on and this curve took the line to the new Paragon station. The old main line became goods only & a complex of dock lines were built over the years. These are all gone today and only the line seen as we cross the bridge remains although the brick frontage of the former Dairycoates engine shed is still identifiable.

8) We are briefly held at the junction with the Bridlington line before curving into Paragon station. Here the train reversed, 60800 running round under the fine trainshed.
