Surviving the last glacial maximum - a photo on Flickriver

Over 40,000 years ago the first aboriginal people began to live in the colder climate of what we now call Tasmania. It was not an island then, but was connected to the rest of the continent that is now the Australian mainland by a land bridge. Since at least 50,000-60,000 years ago these people had been living in the northern and central parts of the Australian continent. Their way of life varied from the desert nomads to settlements near the coastlines.

The more intrepid people moved south where the climate was cooler. But it was about to get much colder. The Last Glacial Maximum (Ice age) had begun about 24,000 years ago and soon glaciers were covering the mountainous regions. These little communities lived largely by the coast, but required huge amounts of resilience and adaptation to survive.

But then about 18,000 years ago the earth's temperature began to rise sharply. Over the next 11,000 years the ice caps melted away and the sea level rose. So dramatic in fact, that sea levels rose 130 metres and the land bridge of the Bassinian plains was flooded cutting these people off from the mainland and forming the island we now call Tasmania. For the last 7,000 years the climate has been relatively stable - but climate change is a fact of life on a living planet.
