TEMCO, Bell Bay - a photo on Flickriver

This photo is also taken from the George Town lookout some 5 kilometres away from the industrial heart of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania. In the distance on the other side of the Tamar you can see Beaconsfield and its iconic mine (I've tagged it for you). Once again the effect of both a hazy summer's day and the wind has left its mark on this shot.

On our side of the Tamar we have a huge mound of wood chips ready to be loaded aboard ships bound for Japan. [There is a link below to a shot of this from Beauty Point, as well as the Beaconsfield Mine and the former Maritime College training ship now moored in the river.]

But the star of this shot is the dirty looking giant plant of TEMCO. I plan to get some closer shots of TEMCO in the future (it would look great in Bill Brandt-style black and white).

The Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO) is Australia's only manganese alloy smelter and supplies two types of this critical steel additive to more than fifty companies around the globe. BHP Pty Ltd built the TEMCO plant in the early 1960s, at Bell Bay, near George Town. When the plant was opened on 11 May 1962, TEMCO formed a major part of the state's industrial sector – and remains so today. TEMCO's employment figures peaked at 475 in the early 1980s. The company's four electric-arc furnaces produce more than 250,000 tonnes of manganese alloys annually, eighty percent of which is exported. BHP sold the plant to Billiton PLC subsidiary, Samancor Pty Ltd, in 1998, but re-established its association with TEMCO a few years later in a merger which created BHP Billiton Pty Ltd.
