John Lee Archer's Finest Lighthouse (Infrared)

            There's quite a story to the building of this lighthouse. It is the third oldest still standing in Australia. 

There are two men who lived almost parallel lives, each on the other side of the world from the other. The most famous of these is the grandfather of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Stevenson (1772-1850), the great civil engineer and builder of lighthouses around the coast of Scotland. His designs revolutionised the art of lighthouse construction. In 1811 he oversaw the construction of his most ambitious lighthouse, Bell Rock. It is the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse.

John Lee Archer (1791-1852) trained in London under Charles Beazley and arrived in the colony of Van Diemen's Land in 1827. He would have known of the Stevenson lighthouses. Archer is often referred to as "the man who built Tasmania". There is no doubt that during those years from arriving in Hobart in 1827 to his death at Stanley in 1852, he was responsible for overseeing a huge range of projects to establish a vibrant colonial infrastructure.

In the early 1830s Archer was entrusted with the task of designing and building a lighthouse in one of the most strategic points of the country. Cape Bruny is the southernmost tip of Bruny Island and one of the most rugged and dangerous of coastlines for ships making their way around the southern tip of Tasmania, enroute to either Hobart or Sydney.

The task of constructing a lighthouse on an island (albeit one that is some 100 kms long) was a daunting one. The stone needed to be quarried, the convict labour supervised, and exacting standards required to make sure the light stood tall and provided a safe beacon for ships at sea. In 1836 the tower was completed and a year later the light was lit for the first time. This is a structure that has withstood some of the most ferocious weather conditions imaginable over the past 188 years.

It is indeed John Lee Archer's masterpiece.
