RENAISSANCE REFORM AND ARTS
1 In the field of the Arts, the "Renaissance" is primarily:
a) The culmination of the great movement of political, economic and technical recovery began in Europe around the year 1000: the reconquest, in painting and sculpture, of the technical capabilities of naturalistic expression, realistic, of the spectacle offered by the world. In short, Europeans will gradually learn to sculpt, draw and paint like the Greeks and Romans were able to do. While these techniques had been lost during the 4th - 6th century of our era. But this reconquest began around the year 1000, 400 years before the "Renaissance"! And the Renaissance is only the end of this movement. This work is European, Italy is only one of the privileged places of this reconquest of realism.
b) The intake in painting and sculpture of new themes drawn from mythology and history of Greece and Rome, and not exclusively Catholic or Orthodox religion. Here again the movement is European, even though Italy is a key driver.
c) The rediscovery of the rules that governed the Greco-Roman architecture, with aesthetic consequences - but not significant techniques- in the art of building. It is an exclusively Italian work, that is going to spread throughout Europe
2 In the field of the Arts, the Reformation is iconoclastic. It is first the destruction of an infinite number of Work of Catholic art.
In architecture it is no creative memorable style. It preserves the best Gothic churches, stripped of their decor, and tends to perpetuate the Gothic civil architecture. Soon she will imitate the Italian style.
In sculpture there does not seem to me that it was particularly creative of a new style.
In paint against, the Reformation, in the Netherlands North, is immediately creative form of art, naturalistic, realistic, positivist, materialist, entirely new. The techniques are those developed in Europe during the previous centuries.
The Reformation brought nothing to the painting technically. As against this are the themes that are new. From this point of view it is a new page in the history of European painting that opens, which remains largely confined to North Netherlands, and will triumph in Europe in the 19- th century.
