(Album Mantegna)
MANTEGNA: FROM THE GOTHIC TO THE MODERN MANNER
The works of Mantegna "the Crucifixion" (Louvre) and "Venus and Mars" (Louvre) are two good examples of the change that intervenes in the art of painting around 1500. At the time that the history of the Art calls "the Renaissance," and that it would be more accurate to call Humanism.
"The Crucifixion" is characteristic of the Gothic spirit, by the theme, religious, Catholic, and by the style. An acute drawing, very sharp contours, accentuated lines, trenches colors, clearly differentiate, separate, the characters and objects of their environment, distinguish the different plans. A very slight blur may appear, but only to suggest the distant (the atmospheric perspective). The first plans, the medium plans, and even the distances always stand out very clearly.
"The modern way" is illustrated by "Mars and Venus". "The modern way" makes appears historical and mythological themes, taken from Greco-Roman antiquity, alongside the Catholic themes. Without conflict none.
The aesthetic is modified: the style is less acute, less sharp. The drawing is less clear, more enveloped, more blurred. Drawing and colors do not separate the characters and objects from their surroundings, but integrate them into the world that surrrounds them. The effect is much more melted. A somewhat myopic aesthetics substitute an eagle eye view.
It is the last step on the way toward an absolutely naturalistic representation of the world on a plane surface, the world as man sees it, in three dimensions, perfectly connected, without caesura.
This long way took place over several centuries, through the fresco, illuminations and of easel painting, throughout the Gothic period. The effort to "imitate the nature" has been constant throughout this period and fully ends, around 1500.
Other works of Mantegna are also characteristic of the same evolution:
Gothic:
"The Virgin in Majesty" (dismembered between San Zeno, Louvre (the Crucifixion), Tours)
"Saint Sebastian" (Louvre).
"Agony in the Garden" (National Gallery)
"Presentation at the Temple" (Berlin)
"Adoration of the Magi" (Uffizi)
"Pieta" (Brera)
Modern way:
"Mars and Venus"
"Minerva chasing the Vices from the Garden of Virtues"
Other works are intermediate. (Album Painters Mantegna)
