Getty Villa, Langdon and Wilson c.1970; Rodolfo Machado & Jorge Silvetti, Renovations 1997-2006

            The Getty Villa is modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, a first-century Roman country house in Herculaneum, Italy which  was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. The J. Paul Getty Museum building was originally designed by Langdon and Wilson in the early 70s with  Norman Neuerburg working closely with J. Paul Getty on the design of the interiors and some of the exterior details.   A renovation by the Boston architectural firm of  Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti was commenced in 1997 and completed in 2006 when it was reopened to the public.  The  architectural plan surrounding the Villa  is designed to simulate an archaeological dig.  

The Getty Villa is located at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway in the Pacific Palisades of Los Angeles, California.
