Entre los restos vegetales que se descomponen en el agua, se desarrolla casi siempre una variada fauna de amebas. Con frecuencia pasan inadvertidas -suelen ser casi transparentes- y sus movimientos son tan lentos que muchas no parecen ser seres vivos. Nuestra ameba de hoy, Pamphagus, es una de éstas. Su cuerpo casi esférico apenas llama la atención si no fuera, porque, a veces, se observan bajo él una maraña de finísimos pies que se cruzan, funden y entremezcan al mismo tiempo que se mueven lentamente. Pamphagus es una ameba que presenta un finísimo caparazón orgánico que envuelve la mayor parte su cuerpo. De la parte inferior de esta casa casi esférica, sugen, como un haz, los numerosos pies de esta ameba ciempiés. Se alimenta de algas pequeñas y de restos vegetales y, con frecuencia, se la ha confundido con otros géneros parecidos como Nuclearia o Allogromia, que también presentan finos pies y formas más o menos esféricas. Es probable que la imagen que mostramos corresponda a la especie Pamphagus hyalinus, el halo claro que se muestra alrededor de su cuerpo es consecuencia de la refracción de la luz. La fotografía se ha tomado a 400 aumentos empleando la técnica de contraste de interferencia y procede de una muestra recogida hace unos días en el Pantano de La Grajera, junto a Logroño.
