Die Freie Stadt Danzig
Die Stadt Danzig liegt beiderseits der Mottlau und nahe der westlichen Weichselmündung in die Danziger Bucht. Diese alte deutsche Hafenstadt wurde mit der näheren Umgebung zusammen nach dem Weltkrieg zu einem unabhängigen Staat unter dem Schutz des Völkerbundes erklärt. Das Staatsgebiet erstreckt sich im W auf den Baltischen Landrücken, im O umfasst es die stellenweise unter dem Meeresspiegel gelegene grüne Niederung des Danziger Werders, das Schwemmland der Weichsel. Wo die von prächtigen Buchenwäldern bedeckten Höhen des Landrückens an die Niederung stoßen, liegt Danzig, dessen Altstadt mit den hohen Giebelhäusern ein besonderes Gepräge besitzt. Längs der Küste zieht sich ein Dünen streifen hin und trennt weiter im O als Frische Nehrung das gleichnamige Haff von der Ostsee.
Danzig hat von seiner Lage als Mündungsstadt der Weichsel bisher nur wenig Vorteil gehabt. Vor dem Weltkrieg war die russische Grenze zu nahe; jetzt bildet Polen das wirtschaftliche Hinterland der Hafenstadt, leitet aber seinen Verkehr überwiegend nach Gdingen, trotzdem Zollunion zwischen Danzig und Polen besteht.
DANZIG ist ein Freistaat; der Senat ist die oberste Regierungs-und Landesbehörde. Die Verfassung sieht allgemeines Wahlrecht für den Volkstag vor. Die auswärtigen Angelegenheiten werden von Polen vertreten.
Für Streitfragen zwischen Polen und Danzig ist ein Hoher Kommissar des Völkerbundes als Schiedsrichter zuständig; Berufungsinstanz: Rat des Völkerbundes. Die Flagge ist rot mit einem gekrönten Doppelkreuz. Das deutsche Danzig wurde durch das Versailler Diktat gegen den Willen der Bevölkerung vom Reich abgetrennt; am 9.11.1920 zur Freien Stadt erklärt; seit 1935 nationalsozialistische Regierung.
Das Staatsgebiet umfaßt 1894 qkm mit 410000 E, d.s. 215 je qkm. Die Stadt Danzig selbst hatte (1935) 262600 E; Bad Zoppot 31000 E. Im Staatsgebiet liegen außerdem noch 2 kleine Städte: Neuteich (3160 E) und Tiegenhof (3252 E) und 258 kleinere Landgemeinden. Der Geburtenüberschuß beträgt 8,5°/,.. Die Bevölkerung ist zu 96% deutsch. Dem Bekenntnis nach 58,7% Protestanten, 36,7% Katholiken und 2,4% Israeliten.
WIRTSCHAFT. Das stellenweise sehr fruchtbare Weichseldelta dient dem Getreidebau und der Viehzucht. An der Küste wird das Fischereigewerbe ausgeübt. Die wichtigsten Industriezweige des Stadtbezirkes sind Maschinenbau, Schiffswerte und Zuckerraffinerien.
VERKEHR. Der Hafen wird gemeinsam mit Polen verwaltet. Im Freistaat ist eine Flotte von rd. 270000 BRT beheimatet. Seeverkehr (1934): 3,2 Mill. NRT. Danzig ist mit dem Deutschen Reich durch vier Haupteisenbahnlinien verbunden. Kraftwagen (1934): 2552, Nationalitätszeichen DA. Rundfunk (1934): 20909 Teilnehmer; Großfunkstelle Danzig.
Landeswährung ist der Danziger Gulden. Parität und Durchschnittskurs (1934) = 0,82 RM.
Der Goldstandard wurde am 2.5.1935 aufgehoben.
The Free City of Danzig
The city of Gdańsk lies on both sides of the Motława River and near the western mouth of the Vistula into the Bay of Gdańsk. After the World War, this old German port city and the surrounding area were declared an independent state under the protection of the League of Nations. The national territory extends to the west on the Baltic ridge, to the east it includes the green lowlands of the Danziger Werder, which are partially below sea level, and the alluvium of the Vistula. Where the heights of the ridge, covered by magnificent beech forests, meet the lowlands, lies Gdansk, whose old town with its high gabled houses has a special character. A strip of dunes runs along the coast and, further to the east, separates the lagoon of the same name from the Baltic Sea as the Frische Spit.
Danzig has so far had little advantage from its location as a city at the mouth of the Vistula. Before the World War, the Russian border was too close; Poland now forms the economic hinterland of the port city, but directs most of its traffic to Gdynia, despite the fact that there is a customs union between Gdansk and Poland.
DANZIG is a free state; the Senate is the highest government and state authority. The constitution provides for universal suffrage for the People's Day. Foreign affairs are represented by Poland.
A High Commissioner of the League of Nations is responsible as an arbitrator for disputes between Poland and Danzig; Appellate body: Council of the League of Nations. The flag is red with a crowned double cross. German Danzig was separated from the Reich by the Versailles Dictate against the will of the population; declared a free city on November 9, 1920; since 1935 National Socialist government.
The national territory covers 1894 square kilometers with 410,000 inhabitants, i.e. 215 per sq km. The city of Danzig itself had (1935) 262,600 E; Bad Sopot 31000 E. There are also 2 small towns in the national territory: Neuteich (3160 E) and Tiegenhof (3252 E) and 258 smaller rural communities. The birth surplus is 8.5%. The population is 96% German. According to confession, 58.7% Protestants, 36.7% Catholics and 2.4% Israelites.
BUSINESS. The Vistula delta, which is very fertile in places, is used for grain cultivation and livestock breeding. The fishing industry is carried out on the coast. The most important industries in the district are mechanical engineering, shipping and sugar refineries.
TRAFFIC. The port is managed jointly with Poland. The Free State is home to a fleet of around 270,000 GRT. Maritime traffic (1934): 3.2 million NRT. Danzig is connected to the German Empire by four main railway lines. Motor vehicle (1934): 2552, nationality symbol DA. Radio (1934): 20,909 participants; Danzig radio station.
The national currency is the Gdańsk guilder. Parity and average exchange rate (1934) = 0.82 RM.
The gold standard was abolished on May 2, 1935.
Slobodni grad Danzig
Grad Gdanjsk leži s obje strane rijeke Motława i blizu zapadnog ušća Visle u Gdanjski zaljev. Nakon svjetskog rata ovaj stari njemački lučki grad i okolica proglašeni su neovisnom državom pod zaštitom Lige naroda. Nacionalni teritorij proteže se na zapadu na baltičkom grebenu, na istoku uključuje zelene nizine Danziger Werder, koje su djelomično ispod razine mora, i aluvij Visle. Tamo gdje se visovi grebena, obrasli veličanstvenim bukovim šumama, susreću s nizinom, smjestio se Gdanjsk, čiji stari grad s visokim sljemenim kućama ima poseban karakter. Pojas dina proteže se duž obale i, dalje prema istoku, odvaja istoimenu lagunu od Baltičkog mora kao Frische Spit.
Danzig je do sada imao malo prednosti zbog svog položaja kao grada na ušću Visle. Prije svjetskog rata ruska je granica bila preblizu; Poljska sada čini gospodarsko zaleđe lučkog grada, ali većinu svog prometa usmjerava na Gdyniu, unatoč činjenici da postoji carinska unija između Gdanjska i Poljske.
DANZIG je slobodna država; Senat je najviša vlada i državna vlast. Ustav predviđa opće pravo glasa za Dan naroda. Vanjske poslove zastupa Poljska.
Visoki povjerenik Lige naroda odgovoran je kao arbitar za sporove između Poljske i Danziga; Žalbeno tijelo: Vijeće Lige naroda. Zastava je crvena s okrunjenim dvostrukim križem. Njemački Danzig je odvojen od Reicha Versailleskim diktatom protiv volje stanovništva; 9. studenog 1920. proglasio slobodnim gradom; od 1935. nacionalsocijalistička vlada.

POSLOVANJE. Delta Visle, koja je mjestimično vrlo plodna, koristi se za uzgoj žitarica i stočarstvo. Na obali se odvija ribarstvo. Najvažnije gospodarske grane u okrugu su strojogradnja, pomorstvo i rafinerije šećera.
PROMET. Lukom upravlja zajednički s Poljskom. Free State je dom flote od oko 270.000 BRT. Pomorski promet (1934.): 3,2 milijuna NRT. Danzig je s Njemačkim Carstvom povezan s četiri glavne željezničke linije. Motorno vozilo (1934.): 2552, oznaka nacionalne pripadnosti DA. Radio (1934.): 20 909 sudionika; Radio postaja Danzig.
Nacionalna valuta je gdanjski gulden. Paritet i prosječni tečaj (1934.) = 0,82 RM.
Zlatni standard ukinut je 2. svibnja 1935. godine.
