Kingfisher with Minnows (1 of 1)

            The early morning light nicely lit up the background behind the snag this male Kingfisher was using to hunt from.  I was with my friend and guide , Ron Bielefeld, shooting out of a blind which is about the only way to get a close shot of a Belted Kingfisher.  They are notoriously shy of humans and generally leave even before you can get a car door open.  This is the male.  As an exception the general rule, the female sports the color and has a red belt across her belly.  They migrate to Florida and nest here from fall to spring, building nests (which I'd love to see) along riverbanks.   They are a common on the wires of our rural roads.   If you see one, just slow down and you'll see what I mean about their being shy.   (Ceryle alcyon)
