This afternoon I ventured into shooting ants. There were some tiny red ants in a small plant in the portico. While shooting the ants I was surprised to see some egg-like things clinging to the stem of the plant. They were so tiny (about 1mm) that you miss them easily. After getting very close I was still surprised to see legs and eyes on them. The ants were constantly visiting these creatures and caressing them with their antennae.

I learnt that these yellow insects are called Aphids (Thanks Naseer). They secrete a honeydew like substance which the ants like very much. It is called "milking"the Aphids by the ants.

It was an amazing sight to view them in macro.
After this episode I started appreciationg the saying "Known is a drop; unknown is an ocean."

Aphids, also known as plant lice are small plant-eating insects, and members of the family Aphidoidea.
They are one of the most destructive insect pests on Earth. With a cosmopolitan distribution, are common in temperate area. They migrate to new horizons thru wind.

An intimate, symbiotic relationship exists between ants and aphids. They are often compared to cattle, with the ants acting as protectors. Ants are looking for the honeydew, a sweet substance that is excreted by aphids through their anus and contains surplus sugar from the aphid's diet. Ants protect aphid eggs during the winter, and carry the newly hatched aphids to new host plants, where the aphids feed on the leaves and the ants get a supply of preferred food.
