This image was actually captured at the Ngala Safari Lodge, a track of land, formerly a ranch, and gifted to the World Wildlife Fund by the previous owner. The safari lodge, adjacent to Kruger National Park (and totally open to the park) is a concession run by &Beyond for the benefit of the land, the wildlife, and the surrounding community. It was a cool morning after an even cooler night and this cow laid in the letting the sun warm her while the Yellow-Billed Oxpecker (the only one of its kind seen on this trip) expurgated parasites from her hide.
According to Wikipedia, the African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo, is a large African bovine not closely related to the slightly larger wild Asian water buffalo, and its ancestry remains unclear. The Cape Buffalo is the typical subspecies, and the largest one found in South and East Africa. The adult buffalo's horns is its characteristic feature, it has fused bases, forming a continuous bone shield referred to as a "boss". It is widely regarded as a very dangerous animal, as it gores and kills over 200 people every year. The African Buffalo is not an ancestor of domestic cattle, and is only distantly related to other larger bovines. Owing to its unpredictable nature, which makes it highly dangerous to humans, the African Buffalo has never been domesticated unlike its Asian counterpart, the water buffalo. Other than humans, African Cape Buffaloes have few predators aside from lions and are capable of defending themselves. Being a member of the "big five" game family, the Cape buffalo is a sought-after trophy in hunting. The African buffalo is a very robust species with its shoulder height ranging from 3.3 to 5.6 feet (1 to 1.7m) and its head-and-body length ranging from 5.6 to 11.2 feet (1.7 to 3.4m). Compared with other large bovines, it has a long but stocky body (the body length can exceed that of the wild water buffalo, which is heavier and taller) and short but thickset legs, resulting in a relatively short standing height. Savanna-type buffaloes range in weigh from 1,100 to 3,000 pounds (500 to 900kg), with males normally larger than females, reaching the upper weight range.
