            Indus River and Indus Valley 

Originating from Manas Sarovar and before merging into Arabian sea, in its 3180km of run, Indus river created and affected 100s of millions of life. But for ladakh it is even more special, the oasis and lifeline on high altitude dessert. 

The Indus River is the backbone of Ladakh—all the major places historically and currently, like Khalatse, Leh, Shey, Karu, Tingmosgang situated close to the river. Major monasteries like Thiksey, Hemis, Alchi, Likir are also around this river. This valley is also most populous.

If you are coming to Leh from Srinagar side, first sight of the river would be after a dramatic decent from Lamayuru.  If coming from Manali side, you will hit it at Mahe or at bottom of Tanglang La, depending on which road you are taking. The river follows the National Highway 1D throughout it stay in Ladakh.

The valley, mostly barren along the length (in some places it even flows through narrow gorge), changes significantly near Leh, where it is vast and wide and farmlands dotting its shore. Greens from vast farm land and tall trees is stark contrast to its surrounding, barren granite and sandstone hills; Oasis in all counts. Wheat, Barley, mustard is main crop. And oh yes, Apricot!!. If you traveling in August you get the opportunity to feast on fresh apricots - believe me, they are heavenly.

If you really want to experience this contrast of landscape, you have to travel towards east from Leh, (towards Karu). Climb up to a high place like Shey Palace or Thiksey Monastery to get a panoramic view of the valley.
