Fushimi-Momoyama Castle, Kyoto (Closer Look)

            Fushimi-Momoyama Castle, also known as Fushimi Castle or Momoyama Castle, was originally built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi (1537-98), a great unifier of Japan of the 16th century, as his retreatment palace. Apart from this castle, Hideyoshi ordered the construction of Osaka Castle in 1583 and, after several extension and expansion, it was finally completed in 1597, a year before he died.
Fushimi-Momoyama Castle was destroyed by a big earthquake soon after its completion in 1596. Hideyoshi rebuilt a new castle in 1597. However, after his death in 1598, his son Hideyori moved to Osaka Castle, while Fushimi-Momoyama Castle itself was severely damaged in the ensuing civil war and finally dismantled in 1623, with rooms and buildings having been incorporated into many temples and castles in Japan.
The current castle is a replica of the original castle and was built in 1964 in concrete.
