            The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name that was printed in Great Britain. The card was posted in Holmfirth, Huddersfield using a 2d. stamp on Thursday the 22nd. September 1921. The card was sent to:

Miss E. Fletcher,
c/o Miss Mellor,
8, Lowther Gardens,
Lytham,
Lancs.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"So glad you are all
having such a jolly
time.
Snow, Tibby, Toby, 
Terry & Cherry are
hopping fellows.
Margaret and I have
been quite happy
together.
Much love from
Peter."

So what else happened on the day that Peter posted the card?

Well, on the 22nd. September 1921, in the city of Madurai in British India, Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the passive resistance movement against British rule, decided to abandon the Western attire that he had worn as a lawyer.

He switched to the traditional robe and loin cloth worn by the poorest of the Indian people. He continued to dress in the style of the common man for the rest of his life.

A Collision at Sea

Also on that day, fourteen of the crew of the Norwegian cargo ship Salina were killed when the ship collided with the Belgian ship Jan Breydel and sank in the English Channel. 

Survivors were rescued by the Jan Breydel.

Mrs. Wintringham

Also on the 22nd. September 1921, for only the second time in British history, a woman was elected to the House of Commons when Margaret Wintringham won a by-election held for the Louth constituency in Lincolnshire. 

Mrs. Wintringham was the widow of Liberal M.P. Thomas Wintringham, the previous holder of the seat.
