Eastbourne - New Bandstand and Pier Circa 1935

            The Postcard

A postally unused postcard bearing no publisher's name, although it states on the divided back that it is a 'British Production'.

It also states on the back in the space for the stamp:

"1d. stamp if with only
sender's name and
address and 5 words
of conventional
greeting."

Don't even think of writing 6 words! And who decides what is conventional in this context? And wouldn't it be better to write the recipient's name and address rather than that of the sender?

Eastbourne Bandstand

Eastbourne's first bandstand was built in 1893 and a municipal orchestra was formed in 1899.

The current bandstand was built in 1935 and cost £28,000, engineered by Leslie Rosevere.

There is a commemorative plaque at the rear of the current bandstand in memory of Eastbourne bandsman John Wesley Woodward, who was one of those playing on the Titanic when it sank on the 15th. April 1912.

The bandstand is one of the most distinctive sights in Eastbourne with its blue dome and silver finial. 

In recent years the bandstand has featured in numerous television programmes, such as Foyle's War, and was shown in the opening sequence of BBC South East News for a number of years.
