Umpqua Community College welding program students with Oregon kiln

            In Oregon, innovations in biochar for agricultural use have taken off, thanks to a Conservation Innovation Grant funded by the Oregon USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

NRCS awarded a grant to the South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership in 2015 for a project called “On-Farm Production and Use of Biochar for Composting with Manure.”

One of the primary goals of the project was to design various kilns that can be used on a small scale on the farm to burn woody debris and biomass to create biochar.

Students enrolled in the welding program at Umpqua Community College helped manufacture the kilns specifically designed to burn woody debris. Pictured in the background: an Oregon kiln.
