Due to a very bad ice storm, the children who were to participate in the MLK Day event at the Winnebago Tribe could not come to the center.  However, an event for the MLK Day of service was still held.  Every day in Winnebago, Nebraska over fifty-five meals are served at the Winnebago Senior Citizen Center, the meals function as a means to reduce food anxiety amongst our community’s seniors.  It also decreases social isolation and promotes access to proper nutrition in order to reduce deadly diseases that shorten and pain their lives. 

On Friday, January 22, 2010 the seniors of the community stopped to reflect on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and what their own personal civil rights journey has been.  Supervised by NSAIE AmeriCorps VISTA, Kate Tabor, each seating place had a special placemat, with quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. as well as American Indian proverbs and words of wisdom.  About 50 seniors attended Friday’s dinner; they really loved and appreciated the colorful placemats. Then for an act of service the VISTA and two Volunteers served the seniors their meal.  

Many elders had interesting stories to tell of their own civil rights experience. One elder told others of his experience in the National Guard in Alabama, helping escort nine black children into school. The seniors at the center have known him for decades, and never knew his direct experience in such a large event in 20th century history. The elder felt very proud to share his story with his friends and family.  Other elders also talked about their experiences facing racism, and how they have overcome. Finally, a prayer for peace and harmony was said before dinner was concluded.  This day of service was important because it allowed the seniors to stop and look back on their own lives, and their own experiences. It was a day to honor and to serve those who have lived through and helped define the civil rights movement.
