Bleaching Starting

            In June 2024, Kent Carpenter and I had the special opportunity to dive in the north and south lagoons of Tubbataha atoll in Palawan, Philippines, in the course of our fish survey.
The north atoll plateaus out at 28 meters, when the reef turns into a sandy plain dominated by sandperches. The reef has a rich coral cover, with unfortunately some bleaching in the shallows. The fish fauna is rich in cardinalfishes and gobies. Oddly, a coral goby, Gobiodon okinawae, which is quite rare in most other locations, is abundant between the staghorn corals. We encountered bumphead parrotfish in this lagoon. Please see the “Tubbataha fishes” album for images of the cryptobenthic reef fishes of the Tubbataha lagoons.
The smaller south atoll is much shallower, only about 8 meters deep. Again, cardinalfishes and gobies are abundant.
