Blue Hippo Misty Sunrise

The "Blue Hippo" farm dam is one of my all-time favourite locations in Greyton.

Sitting here at the water's edge in the first light of dawn while waiting for the sunrise... is a spiritual experience.

I always try to bring my photo-workshop groups to this dam on the first morning of their weekend in Greyton.

I always try to arrive at the dam while it is still quite dark... just as the first light of dawn is visible on the horizon.

We all park our vehicles at the top of a hill... within 50 metres of the dam... but without a direct view of what we will be shooting.

Then I always watch out for the expressions on the faces of my clients when they first notice the dam... it's priceless!

They might still have been half-asleep when we arrived... but all of a sudden... they're instantly awake... and ready to shoot!

Sometimes we get clouds and no mist... sometimes we get mist and no clouds... and sometimes we get no clouds and no mist.

Then sometimes we get wind... which completely screws up the nice reflections... and also blows away any potential mist.

Extremely infrequently (this was my first experience in at least a dozen visits) we get both clouds and mist... and neither a breath of wind... perfect conditions for shooting at this location!

But none of this would be possible without the approval of Gabby Van Heerden and Simone Beckerling... who own this amazing farm... and who so kindly permit me to bring my groups here! Thank you!!

We still haven't spotted the Blue Hippo though... so that might just be a myth... a bit like the Loch Ness monster. :)
