1001 Stratton, Swindon 25/03/23 - a photo on Flickriver

            A view of the approaching preserved Hastings DEMU No 1001. Running from Hastings to Bristol Temple Meads with a special, the "AVON AMBASSADOR". ~Timed at 1110 hours, Rep. No 1Z65.

Our train is a Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) that worked on the London Charing Cross – Hastings route under British Rail between 1957 and 1986.

It was subsequently preserved by Hastings Diesels Limited (HDL); we restored it to its former glory and returned it to main-line operation ten years later, in 1996.

Our train is commonly referred to as Unit 1001, as the first “Hastings” DEMU (all six of whose vehicles we own) was so numbered. Although the train we use on our outings does include at least one vehicle from the original unit 1001, some of its vehicles are from other units.

The British Rail Class 201 (or 6S) six-car diesel-electric multiple units (DEMUs) were built in 1957–1958 at Eastleigh and underframes were built at Ashford. The Southern Region Class 201-207 DEMUs are nicknamed 'Thumpers' due to the noise they made while in motion, owing to the four cylinder engines.
