Strand Hotel: the exterior

Finally in this short series, the exterior. Here’s the street view of the Strand Hotel in Yangon, Burma/Myanmar.

This luxury hotel, with its attractive portico and private road, overlooks the riverfront in Yangon. Built in 1901 in what was then Rangoon, its guest list reads like an international Who’s Who: Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, George Orwell, Lord Mountbatten, King Topou V of Tonga, the Prince of Wales (later, briefly, King Edward VIII) and President Carter. But in due course it was sold on, extensively refurbished, and it reopened in 1993 as an all-suite, top-of-the range boutique hotel.

Its teak and marble floors, mahogany furniture and canopied beds have all been retained, and they complement original pieces such as period bathroom fixtures. But unlike other grand old hotels in South-east Asia, the Strand's restoration remained true to its architectural past: there’s no new wing, no swimming pool, no tennis courts. Just pure unadulterated luxury, in which we wallowed for a few hours on our last night in Burma.
