Farewell to the Red House... - a photo on Flickriver

            As we leave the Red House, a final look-back across the croquet lawn, with Roebuck, by Georg Ehrlich, in the foreground.

From 1957, the Red House in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, was home to the composer Benjamin Britten and the tenor Peter Pears until their respective deaths in 1976 and 1986. 

The remarkable thing about the house is that the visitor can sense the spirit of Britten and Pears here – perhaps because they’re not that long departed and it’s easy to identify with everyday things such as the furniture and all the bits and bobs around the house. Yet it’s more than that… it’s the sense of the music that was created here, the happiness and contentment that the couple undoubtedly felt in this comfortable but unostentatious house and its beautiful garden. 

Today, the Red House is maintained by the Britten-Pears Foundation, a charity which conserves and develops the house as a heritage site – and a thoroughly absorbing one, as well. It also maintains a unique archive of manuscripts, documents and works of art relating to the musicians. I for one am constantly grateful that such charities exist; they are guardians of all that we hold dear, and we (as individuals and as a nation) would be far poorer without them.
