Shaldon beach crowds watch a ship-shaped bonfire for Guy Fawkes Night 2024

Across the river from Teignmouth, a large crowd can be seen on Shaldon beach watching a huge, ship-shaped bonfire burn for a slightly early Guy Fawkes Night celebration. Although the reason for having a ship-shaped bonfire was actually fairly innocent (the 2024 Shaldon bonfire theme was the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies), it's good when a photo can have more than one meaning: I know I'm not the only one who could also see an allusion to the grim history of "wreckers" and wrecking on the Devon coasts. Of course the original tradition of burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes on the bonfire could probably be considered a bit questionable too, especially with it's anti-Catholic sentiment in the past - but that's taking traditions far too literally.
