50035_1977_12_Paddington

            I have always found Paddington a difficult station to get a decent photograph. On New Years Eve 1977 we find 50035 waiting to depart with an express for the West Country which I will travel on as far as Newbury.

Locomotive History
50035 was built by English Electric at there Vulcan Foundry works as D435 and entered service in August 1968 on West Coast Main Line duties north of Crewe. With the completion of the West Coast Main Line electrification to Glasgow in 1974 thirty five class 50’s were transferred to the Western Region, however 50035 was one of the fifteen locomotives retained by the London Midland Region until finally transferred to the Western Region (Bristol Bath Road) in January 1976. In December 1976 it transferred to Laira followed by a transfer to Old Oak Common in June 1980. In 1978 it was decided to name the class after Royal Navy warships and 50035 was the first to be named when it received the name Ark Royal on the on the 17th January 1978 at Plymouth station. In the early 1980’s it was decided to refurbish the class 50 fleet and 50035 entered Doncaster works in November 1980 for refurbishment and was released back into traffic on the 27th March 1981. 50 035 worked its last passenger British Rail revenue earning train on 14th July 1990 (1V10 Brighton - Plymouth from Salisbury to Exeter) and was withdrawn at 10.00hrs on 3rd August 1990. Following withdrawal it was sold for preservation and can currently (April 2012) be found on the Severn Valley Railway.
