Pelican in Flight - Beating the Surf

"Pelican in Flight - Beating the Surf" by Patti Deters. This brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) was flying just ahead of the breaking waves as if she were playing a game of "Beat the Surf". In reality, I think she was foraging - looking for fish to get close to the surface as the surf rolled closer to shore. Did you know these large water birds can have a wingspan of up to 6 feet! This particular bird was spotted at the beach in Washington Oaks Gardens State Park on the Palm Coast of Florida, south of Jacksonville near St. Augustine. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean were a pale blue on this day.
